FIFA Locks Down: 344 Trademarks Registered in Mexico for the 2026 World Cup

With the opening whistle at the Estadio Azteca just months away, FIFA has made its legal strategy clear. The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) recently granted the federation 344 trademark and design registrations, shielding every commercial aspect of the tournament hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

What exactly is protected?

It’s not just the official logo. The protection extends from the exclusive “FWC 26” typography to the mascot designs (Maple, Zayu, and Clutch) and the official match ball, “Trionda.” Even seemingly generic phrases like “FIFA World Cup 2026” or simply “FIFA” are locked down. Additionally, the Mexican government has registered slogans such as “México 2026, one country, one passion” to prevent unauthorized commercial exploitation.

The Ambush Marketing Trap

For marketing agencies and business owners, the biggest threat is Ambush Marketing. Attempting to link a brand to the World Cup without being an official sponsor can lead to fines of up to 29 million MXN, business closures, and the seizure of promotional goods.

How to navigate the World Cup legally

The key lies in creativity. Brands can use generic soccer terminology (goal, pitch, passion) but must strictly avoid using FIFA’s registered assets in promotional materials, websites, or social media. For physical businesses in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, it is vital to respect the 2km “Clean Zones” around stadiums, where outdoor advertising is strictly regulated by FIFA’s legal framework.
