Applications for an appellation of origin can be filed with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) by:
The application must identify any official standards set by the Ministry of Economy that apply to the product.
Appellations of origin are owned by the Mexican government.
Authorization from IMPI is required to use an appellation of origin. Authorized users can include natural or legal persons engaged in the extraction, production, or manufacture of the product within the territory designated in the declaration of protection and in compliance with the official standards set by the Ministry of Economy.
Authorizations are valid for 10 years and may be renewed. They can be transferred under specific conditions, and may be revoked if granted against the law or on false information
Once granted, an appellation of origin remains in force indefinitely unless revoked by IMPI.
