Survival Guide: Legal Advertising for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico

Advertising during the 2026 World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it’s also a legal minefield. FIFA protects its intellectual property with absolute rigor, and IMPI in Mexico will not hesitate to penalize those attempting to ride the wave without being official sponsors. To ensure your business doesn’t get a “red card,” we’ve created this Legal Traffic Light Guide.

RED LIGHT: Prohibited (Official Sponsors Only)

Using these elements without a license is a direct infringement that could result in fines of up to $29.3 million MXN (per Art. 388 of the LFPPI):

  • Logos and Identity: The World Cup trophy, the “United 2026” emblem, and the official mascots.
  • Registered Names: “FIFA World Cup,” “World Cup 2026,” or simply “FIFA.”
  • Tickets: Raffling or giving away stadium tickets as part of a commercial promotion.

YELLOW LIGHT: Caution (Risk Zone)

This is where creativity can be mistaken for “Ambush Marketing.” Proceed only with expert advice:

  • Indirect References: Phrases like “Road to the grand final” or “Mexico’s biggest summer event.”
  • Player Imagery: Using the image of national team players requires specific individual or collective image rights contracts.

GREEN LIGHT: Permitted (Free and Generic Use)

You can leverage the excitement by using terms that belong to the general culture of soccer:

  • Soccer Language: “Goal,” “pitch,” “stadium,” “passion,” “victory.”
  • National Colors: Using green, white, and red (without the national crest or federation logo) is completely free.
