In 2025, more than 37,000 new patent families related to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) were published worldwide. The figure highlights the unprecedented pace of innovation in a sector where companies are increasingly competing to develop, commercialize, and protect new AI technologies.
The data comes from the latest Patent Trends Update in GenAI report, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with EconSight.

WIPO’s latest analysis provides a clear picture of how quickly generative AI patents are expanding worldwide.
Between 2024 and 2025 alone, more than 56,000 new GenAI patent families were published. According to the report, this figure exceeds the cumulative number of patent families published throughout the previous decade, from 2014 to 2023.
The share of GenAI patents within overall AI patenting activity has also increased significantly. In 2023, generative AI represented approximately 6.1% of all AI patenting activity. By 2025, that figure had reached a new high of 8.7%.
This growth demonstrates that generative AI is rapidly becoming one of the most strategically important areas of technological innovation—and, consequently, one of the most competitive areas of AI intellectual property.
What is driving this unprecedented growth in artificial intelligence patents?
According to WIPO’s analysis, one important factor is what has been described as the “ChatGPT effect.”
The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 triggered a significant increase in investment, research, and development related to generative AI. Companies, universities, and research institutions accelerated efforts to develop new AI models, applications, architectures, and technologies.
However, patent statistics do not immediately reflect technological developments.
Because there is typically an approximately 18-month delay between patent filing and publication, the full impact of the investment and research boom that followed ChatGPT is only now becoming visible in official patent data.
For businesses, this delay is particularly relevant. The technologies being developed today may become part of tomorrow’s competitive patent landscape.
The global distribution of AI patents is also changing.
Japan’s SoftBank emerged as the world’s largest holder of GenAI patents, with nearly 3,000 published patent families, virtually all of which were published in 2025.
China continues to lead in terms of absolute patent volume. However, other major innovation markets are rapidly expanding their presence.
The United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, and Switzerland have recorded annual growth rates exceeding 80%, narrowing the gap in relative terms.
This shift illustrates how competition in artificial intelligence is no longer limited to the development of AI models and products. Companies and countries are increasingly competing through research, innovation, patent portfolios, and intellectual property strategies.
The evolution of AI patent activity is also reflected in the technologies being protected.
According to the WIPO report, large language models (LLMs) have surpassed generative adversarial networks (GANs) as the dominant architecture within the GenAI patent landscape.
This shift reflects a broader transformation in artificial intelligence—from technologies primarily focused on image generation toward systems capable of processing language, generating text, and supporting increasingly sophisticated multimodal AI applications.
For businesses, this evolution creates new opportunities for innovation while also raising important questions about patentability, ownership, licensing, freedom to operate, and intellectual property protection.
